Chile and Juventus midfielder Arturo Vidal has been banned from driving for four months after he was found guilty of drink driving.

Despite the judge's ruling, national team coach Jorge Sampaoli says Vidal can continue to play for Chile in the on-going Copa America.

Vidal appeared in court on Wednesday after being detained overnight. He suffered minor injuries in the crash, as did his wife, who was a passenger.

Vidal scored twice on Monday in Chile's 3-3 draw with Mexico and is the leading scorer in the tournament with three goals.

Chilean state television showed pictures of Vidal's badly damaged red Ferrari and said his car collided with another vehicle just south of the capital city.

The Juventus star posted a short video message on YouTube. "Today, I had a car accident. It was not my fault. I'm fine, my family's fine. Thank you for everything," Vidal said.

It was not immediately clear how Vidal's arrest would affect his participation in the tournament.
